Western Electric 46

    Peter:

Don’t judge any 46 amp if it has not been properly restored. The paper capacitors in this amp are not very well sealed (sealed with tar) and become quite leaky at DC due to absorption of moisture.

In my experience most WE caps are leaky and even if unused will soon become so. I only use them for crossovers now–no DC.

Take one WE cap and heat it on the bench with a heat gun while measuring DC leakage and watch it go down! Some people report success by heating them in an oven to drive out moisture.

Most 46Cs probably need a lot of work, whether it is obvious as in that ebay amp or not.
The units we had in the Silbatone factory that I liked so much were rebuilt with proper NOS caps not long ago.

46C only has 10 or 12 of these good sounding, very troublesome caps. The 41-42-43 set has several dozen!!

Even when working properly, I will say it is a soft organic sounding amplifier. In combination with the 49 preamp, it produces remarkable psychedelic 3-D with the 15A and full range sound with good bass. It sounds like it is singing softly in your ear…a rare and special effect.

I can call it soft but not „dull“… I thought it was quite exciting in a mushroom trip sort of way!
The sweet and easy sound is nothing like the scary Dr. Frankenstein’s Lab visual style!

You are correct that it might be a great match with the 16A.

PS: Hey Holger, I have a few old USA „Rundinstrumente“ if you need them.

      Joe,

thanks for the information and for sharing your experience! Your hint about the „baked“ WE capacitors is very interesting to me, since i bought a leaky one years ago and almost wanted to throw it in the garbage. Now i’ll give it a last chance 🙂

I think the 46’s i’ve heared have been properly restored – the sound was like you described it. Probably i expected something else and was kind of disappointed 😉

      Best,
      Peter

46C is a good amp. Best 15A system I have heard used 46C and 49 line amps.

That one on ebay is in very bad condition and probably worth no more than $20,472.75 on a good day. ;op

$10000 per watt, so that „first watt“ had better be a good one!
